Moving to Connecticut? The Essential Guide to a Smooth Transition
Relocating to a different state can be both exciting and overwhelming. Ooof! Especially if you’re moving with kids. There’s a lot more involved than just packing up your stuff – from legal paperwork to emotional prep. You’ll want to be ready.
1. Choosing The Right City
Bristol, New Britain, Plainville, Southington, Fairfield, Farmington, Enfield.
These are among the safest and most comfortable places to live. I do not recommend Hartford, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Stamford, or New Haven. These cities have a high crime rate, along with several other “No no’s” factors for me.
2. Kids & School Enrollment
- Obtain transcripts & records from kid’s current school
- Request letters of recommendation (Always good to have these handy!)
Transfer or update IEP/504 plans (These are plans designed to support students with disabilities) - Gather birth certificates & proof of residency for enrollment.
Register for school bus or transportation services.
3. Setup Your Utilities
- For electricity, call Eversource – 800-286-2000
- For gas, also call Eversource – 800-989-0900
- For internet, Frontier has great plans as low as $45/month.
If you have EBT/food stamps, you can call Xfinity for $30 wifi.
4. Transportation & Utilities
- Update your driver’s license within 30 days of moving. Having your updated license in hand once you’re moved will help you transition smoothly!
- Register your vehicle in Connecticut
- Check if you need an emissions test (I know a guy! Email me)
- Update your car insurance for Connecticut requirements.
You can do all of this at the DMV. Search for your nearest DMV.
5. Finances & Legal
- Transfer or open a local bank account (Achieve Financial Credit Union).
- Update billing addresses & accounts (address updates can be done for a small fee at the post office website).
- If necessary, update your employer about your move.
